Tennis ball hitting a racket with force.

Is It Time to Restring Your Racquet? (Probably!)

One of the most common questions I hear at The Racquet Doctor is: "How often should I restring my racquet?"

The short answer?  Probably more often than you are.

Most players wait until a string breaks before thinking about restringing. While that might save a few dollars today, it's usually costing you performance every time you step on the court.

Here's the Rule of Thumb

Restring your racquet as many times per year as you play each week.

For example:

  • 🎾 Play once a week → Restring once a year
  • 🎾🎾 Play twice a week → Restring twice a year
  • 🎾🎾🎾 Play three times a week → Restring three times a year

This is just a starting point. Depending on your playing style and the type of string you use, you may need to restring more often.

"But My Strings Aren't Broken..."

Here's the secret:  Strings don't have to break to go bad.

Every time you hit a ball, your strings stretch and lose tension. Over time they become:

  • Less powerful
  • Less comfortable
  • Less accurate
  • Less spin-friendly

Think of it like driving on worn-out tires. They'll still get you down the road—but they're not performing the way they were designed to.

Different Strings Age Differently

Multifilament Strings

Examples: Wilson NXT Comfort, Tecnifibre X-One Biphase, Head Velocity MLT

These provide incredible comfort and power but gradually lose tension over time. If you're looking for that fresh, lively feel, don't wait until they break.

Polyester Strings

Examples: Solinco Hyper-G, Solinco Confidential, Luxilon ALU Power

Poly strings are a little sneaky.

They usually don't break quickly—but they go dead.

A dead polyester string becomes stiffer, loses spin, and can even become uncomfortable on your arm. Many competitive players restring every 10–20 hours of play, even if the strings still look perfect.

Signs It's Time to Restring

If you notice any of these, your racquet is asking for a tune-up:

✅ Balls are flying long
✅ You've lost spin and control
✅ Strings feel stiff or "boardy"
✅ You're constantly straightening your strings
✅ The racquet just doesn't feel as lively as it used to

If you've caught yourself saying, "Something just feels off," you're probably right.

Your Racquet Deserves a Fresh Set

Fresh strings can make an old racquet feel brand new.

You'll enjoy:

  • Better control
  • More power
  • More spin
  • Improved comfort
  • Greater confidence on every shot

And let's be honest...  A fresh set of strings is a lot cheaper than buying a new racquet!
